As we gradually climb out of winter, the blackbirds are still feasting on the hawthorn and crab apples outside the studio. With their extraordinary clear-eyed gaze, territorial squabbles, panicky evening calls and sharp outline they are, for me, a perennial subject and constant source of wonder and distraction.
