The river Dart at dusk – tide slipping out, birds heading to roosts, the first owl-calls. This mezzotint sees a return to a familiar haunt for me, high above the banks of the river itself at Sharpham.
As we gradually climb out of winter, the blackbirds are still feasting on the hawthorn and crab apples outside the studio. With their extraordinary clear-eyed gaze, territorial squabbles, panicky evening calls and sharp outline they are, for me, a perennial subject and constant source of wonder and distraction.
