National Portrait Gallery commission

In the autumn of 2022 NPG commissioned me to make a mezzotint of a human eye.  The newly refurbished galleries now include space for the NPG’s extensive print collection and they were keen to include a contemporary example of mezzotint.  A team came to the studio in November and filmed the making of the plate, alongside my partner Paul making a traditional line engraving.  Plate, print and film are now on permanent display in Gallery 11 at the NPG.  It was an absolute honour.

The ‘eye’ is my daughter’s.  I wanted to make an eye on the verge of tears.  A young eye weeping for the state of the world.
